Dan: almost every faceted search tool I've seen has slightly different requirements. In case of Zappos: if I personally go shop for shoes, I often know whether I want black or brown shoes. It has never happened to me that I planned to buy black shoes but left the store with brown shoes. So I would be okay with their faceted search.

Only testing will show what works best for your audience. I'd do that with the live site, and with real visitors. Make an A and a B-version and see which one works best.

Also, the more options, the more complex. Depending on your audience, you may choose to reduce the flexibility and increase the 'easy-to-learn' factor.

Jep - I like your list of best practices. I'm curious, though - many leading sites that use faceted search (e.g., Zappos) do not let a user multi-select parameters. For example, you can't select brown shoes AND black shoes. Just one or the other. Do you see that as a drawback? Or just a different strategy?
